MALA NECKLACE
Mala beads are traditionally used for japa meditation – reciting a positive affirmation or mantra along each bead to come into a more calming, connected and spiritual state. Malas are made on the principle of the sacred number 108. Traditionally, there are 108 beads on a strand of Buddhist mala prayer beads. The origin of is the sacred number related astrologically to the 12 astrological houses, multiplied by the 9 planets in our solar system.
To use a mala, you hold it in either hand and recite a mantra while holding each bead between the thumb and one of the fingers, moving from one bead to the next with each recitation.
When reciting a mantra with a mala meditation, you recite the entire mantra on each bead (not one bead per word. You can also use affirmations with your mala, repeating the affirmation with each bead. The recitations can be done silently, as a whisper, in song or spoken out loud. 108 recitations equals one full round. In this way your Mala is a personal tool that allows you to keep track of your mantra recitations.
